Reddit is now blocking most search engines and AI bots

Reddit has recently updated its robots.txt file to block most search engines and AI web crawlers from accessing its content, except for Google. This change basically means that only Google can show recent Reddit posts in its search results, while platforms like Bing and DuckDuckGo are limited to only older content. Reddit says that it “believes in an open internet, but not the misuse of public content”.

In February, Google announced an extended partnership with Reddit, reportedly paying $60 million annually to access and index its content.

OpenAI announced a search engine called SearchGPT

OpenAI has introduced SearchGPT, an innovative AI-powered search engine prototype that delivers direct answers with clear citations, moving beyond traditional link-based results. This move marks OpenAI's entry into the competitive search market, aiming to challenge tech giants such as Google.

The prototype combines the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-4 models with real-time web information, allowing users to ask follow-up questions in a conversational manner.

SearchGPT also introduced tools for publishers to manage how their content appears in search results, ensuring better control and transparency.

Google abandons plans to deprecate third-party cookies

Google has been developing a new solution Privacy Sandbox, which aims to balance user privacy with valuable data for advertisers. Although it has taken some time, the latest statement from the Privacy Sandbox team revealed that third-party cookies in its Chrome browser will not be phased out. Instead, an alternative solution is being developed to give users more control over their privacy settings.

2024 Zero-Click Search Study

In 2024, what happens after Europeans or Americans search? In the latest study by SparkToro and Datos, it was found that only 37.4% of Google searches in the US and 36% in the EU result in clicks to the open web. Nearly 30% of all Google search clicks go to Google's own platforms, such as YouTube, Google Images, and Google Maps. This self-preferencing boosts Google's monetization and dominance across multiple sectors, raising concerns about its monopoly power.

This highlights a growing trend where Google retains traffic within its ecosystem, impacting web publishers and marketers.
