Google Search becomes more intuitive
In 2022, Google focused on making Search even more intuitive and launched multisearch, a new way to search the web using text and images in the same query. Google now also lets US users explore topics that are related to their search. These new filters help discover something new about a specific topic or quickly find the answer you were looking for. Topics are dynamic and change as you tap on them.

Continuous scroll
Google initially brought the continuous scroll to mobile search in October 2021 and now it brings continuous scroll to desktop search results in the US too. When you reach the bottom of a search results page on desktop, the next six pages of results will automatically load with relevant information until users see a “More results” button.
Google Search in video
The tech giant is now also testing a search feature to allow users to search text within video. Thanks to the new beta, users in India can type keywords in the Search app to find the exact part of the video they were looking for. This feature is game-changing to be able to search for a relevant part in video or audio content too. Hopefully, we will be able to use the Search in Video feature soon too!
December’s Helpful Content Update
On 5th December, Google also released the December 2022 Helpful Content Update, a major update to the Helpful Content System to improve its classifier. The update now works across all webs globally in all languages to promote content that is helpful and not created solely for SEO purposes. The Helpful Content System is a site-wide ranking signal that can lower the rankings of all content on your website.
You can check our blog post on Helpful Content Update to help you build human-first content and improve your rankings.
Link Spam Update
In Google’s continued efforts to improve the quality of the search results, a global link spam update affecting all languages was launched on 14th December 2022. The new update now fights link spam with SpamBrain, an AI-based spam-prevention system to nullify unnatural links. Besides that, it can now also detect sites buying links and sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links.
Google has strict guidelines against obtaining links primarily to boost search rankings and any links that are intended to manipulate rankings in search results are considered link spam. How much your site is affected will depend on how you acquire links and how you link out to other pages too.
List of Google Search ranking updates in 2022

Below you will find a summary of all confirmed algorithm updates with dates to help you better understand the impact of these changes on your website. We also regularly add all algorithm updates to the Projects section so you can track how these changes affect your rankings.
E-A-T gets an extra E for Experience
Many SEOs are familiar with E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) that Google uses to evaluate the overall quality of a web page. Demonstrating your first-hand experience is more important than ever for search rankings as E-A-T has gained an E for "Experience", which is now also incorporated into the quality rater guidelines.
The Experience factor considers the extent to which the author has the necessary knowledge or skill for the topic. E-E-A-T is rated for every query that is searched and if you understand how raters learn to assess good content, that might help you improve your own content. We now wonder if the update is another push against AI-generated content…
ChatGPT Caused 'Code Red' at Google
ChatGPT, a new chatbot from OpenAI, has gone viral on social media as the latest favorite tool for getting answers online. It can give people direct answers to almost any query and accomplish tasks like writing articles or essays. The AI text generator has become so popular that Google could face the first serious threat to its Search product. Google’s management has already issued a "code red" over the rise of the AI bot ChatGPT. It seems like Google is much more concerned about the new chatbot than we initially thought. What about you? Have you tried ChatGPT yet?
